Vatica chinensis, commonly known as Adakkapine, is a tropical evergreen tree that can grow up to 25 meters in height. It features a straight trunk with pale green, smooth bark that is often buttressed at the base. The leaves are simple, alternate, and leathery, with an elliptic-oblong shape. The tree produces small, white, fragrant flowers in clusters, and its fruit is a capsule that splits open to release seeds.

Habitat

Native to the Western Ghats in Karnataka and Kerala states of southern India, Vatica chinensis was historically found in Sri Lanka, where it is now extremely rare or possibly extinct. The tree thrives in low to medium altitude evergreen and semi-evergreen forests, as well as in plains, particularly in sacred groves.

Planting and Care

  • Propagation: Can be propagated from seeds. Seeds should be sown in well-drained soil and kept moist until germination.
  • Soil: Prefers fertile, well-drained soil but can tolerate a range of soil types.
