Sesbania sesban subsp. Sesban

Common Name: Common sesban, जयंती, शेवरी

Scientific Name: Sesbania sesban subsp. SesbanFamily: Categories: ,
Sesbania sesban subsp. sesban, commonly known as the Egyptian Riverhemp, is a short-lived, fast-growing shrub or small tree that can grow up to 6 meters tall, sometimes reaching 8 meters. It has paripinnately compound leaves with 6-27 pairs of linear to oblong leaflets per pinnae, and the leaves and rachis tend to be pilose. The flowers are yellow with brown and purple streaks on the corolla, appearing in racemes, while the fruit is a pendulous, subcylindrical pod, up to 30 cm long, containing numerous seeds. Native to tropical and southern Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, and the Indian subcontinent, the tree grows primarily in seasonally dry tropical biomes.
The Egyptian Riverhemp’s ecological significance extends beyond its physical characteristics, as it provides a valuable service to the environment. Its ability to fix nitrogen improves soil fertility, making it a beneficial species for agricultural and ecological purposes.
