Holigarna arnottiana, commonly known as the Black Varnish tree or Malabar Marking Nut, is a deciduous tree native to the southwestern parts of India and endemic to the Western Ghats. This tree can grow up to 30 meters in height and features finely fissured bark that exudes white latex, which turns black upon exposure to air.
The flowers of Holigarna arnottiana are borne in panicles that are 12-24 cm long, golden yellow, and pubescent. These flowers are polygamous and greenish-white in color, adding to the tree’s unique characteristics.

Habitat

Holigarna arnottiana is native to the southwestern parts of India and is endemic to the Western Ghats, particularly from the central and southern Sahyadris.
