Premna coriacea

Common Name: Leathery Premna, चम्बरवेल

Scientific Name: Premna coriaceaFamily: Categories: ,

Premna coriacea, commonly known as Leathery Premna, is a large, woody climbing shrub or liana belonging to the Lamiaceae (mint) family. It is native to the Indian Subcontinent and parts of mainland Southeast Asia, where it occurs mainly in warm, seasonally dry to moist tropical forests.

The plant develops long, woody, often climbing branches and can grow extensively through surrounding vegetation. Its leaves are simple, opposite, ovate-oblong to elliptic, with a leathery texture, a rounded to heart-shaped base, and prominent veins on the underside. Small creamy-white flowers are produced in terminal, corymb-like clusters, followed by small fleshy drupes that become dark when mature.

Habitat

Premna coriacea occurs in tropical evergreen, semi-evergreen and moist deciduous forests, particularly in humid forested regions and the Western Ghats. It has been recorded from southern and northeastern India as well as Bangladesh, Nepal, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam and neighbouring regions.

Planting and Care

Light: Partial shade to full sun; bright filtered light is suitable when grown with support.

Soil: Deep, fertile, organic-rich and well-drained soil with good moisture retention.

Watering: Moderate to regular watering during establishment; maintain soil moisture during active growth while avoiding prolonged waterlogging.

Maintenance: Provide a strong support such as a trellis or sturdy tree. Prune periodically to control its vigorous climbing growth and remove old or damaged branches.

Additional Information

Ornamental Use: Its vigorous climbing habit, large leathery foliage and clusters of pale flowers make it suitable for large tropical gardens, botanical collections, naturalistic landscapes and supported climber plantings.

Ecological Importance: As a native forest climber, it contributes to the structure and complexity of tropical forest vegetation and provides cover within the forest canopy and understory.

Special Feature: The species is distinguished by its large leathery leaves with prominent veins and its ability to develop into a substantial woody climber. Mature plants can become extensive and may resemble small trees when growing through surrounding vegetation.

Propagation: Propagation can be carried out through seeds or vegetative cuttings, using healthy mature plant material in a warm, humid growing environment.

Flowering and Fruiting: In southern India, flowering and fruiting are generally recorded around April–June, although the period can extend across a wider season depending on locality and variety.

Regional Name: The Marathi name चम्बरवेल (Chambarvel) is documented for Premna coriacea. Other regional names recorded include Kannada इषे (Ishe), चांखारी (Chaankhaari) and जरंगिबಳ್ಳಿ (Jarangi balli).

Taxonomic Note: Premna coriacea C.B.Clarke is the currently accepted species name. It belongs to the Lamiaceae family under modern APG classification; older literature may place Premna in Verbenaceae. Kew recognizes two accepted varieties, P. coriacea var. coriacea and var. villosa.
